Koikejuku has a lot of students working in the medical field.
The other day, we helped Ms. S, an occupational therapist, make an English script for the power point presentation she will give to a medical society held in Canada.
This is what we usually do and is not rare, but Ms. S surprised me by suddenly saying “Ms. Koike, I was asked to give a lecture at a university in Canada after attending a conference of the society!”
Well, the tough work started from there, and we began to work from scratch on her presentation for the lecture. Both Ms. S and I had tight schedules, but working with a native speaker, we were able to finish it in time for her lecture.
She reported to me that it was a big success. I knew she could do it, but I was really relieved when I heard that.
She was asked a ton of questions about problems exclusive to Japan, such as the movements required to use a Japanese type restroom, getting futon mats into and out of Japanese closets, and about how to support clients with these movements through occupational therapy.
After a while, I received a package from her.

Ms. S, you found what you want to do more from visiting Canada! Your bright light shines more as you travel around!
She started to come up with a lot of what she wants to do (dreams) after she went to Canada.
小池塾には、医療関係の方が多くいらっしゃいます。
先日は、作業療法士のＲさんのカナダでの学会発表のため、
原稿からプレゼンまでを
英語で一緒に作り上げました。
それはこれまでにもよくあることだったのですが、
次の授業で、Ｒさん、
「小池先生～～、学会の後、カナダの大学で講義をすることになりました～～！」
と、突然のびっくり発表。
さぁ、そこからが大変、
一から講義用にプレゼンを作り上げることになりました。
Ｓさんも私もなかなかな厳しいスケジュールの中、
ネイティブ・スピーカーと一緒に
ギリギリにプレゼンを仕上げました。
結果、講義は大成功だったそうです！
大丈夫とは思っていましたが、本当にホッとしましたね。
和式トイレや和室での布団の上げ下げ、
そういう体の動きをどうサポートするかなど、
日本にしかない事例の発表に質問が相次ぎ、
有意義なコミュニケーションができたのことでした。
