Q: Is it common to have an entrance ceremony at school?
A: No, we do not have anything like entrance ceremonies for schools. Also, first grade is not the first year of elementary school. Kindergarten (approximately age 5) is the first year of elementary school. Children typically attend elementary school for K – 6th grade. Junior high is 7th and 8th grade, and high school is grades 9-12, so we actually have 13 years of school before graduation. In some areas, they have middle school instead of junior high, and middle school is typically grades 6 – 8, though sometimes it also includes 9th grade.
Many of our students use the word “kindergarten” when what they are referring to is actually a daycare program, or sometimes preschool. Daycare is where you leave your children to be tended to while you work. Preschool is usually a half day, and is a place 3 or 4 year olds can go to learn to write characters, learn color names, and other simple things.
