Q: What do you think are differences between Japanese comics and American comics?
A: Aside from the obvious, I don’t really know. US comic books are, of course, read in the opposite direction! I supposed most US comics are based on the lives of super heroes, but we also have many historical comics, or horror comics, etc.
Our comic books are also much smaller. They don’t have very many pages, so we have to wait until the next month to find out what happens next. Also, we do not have anything like phonebook manga. Each comic is released on its own.
These days a lot of popular TV shows are being made into comics. For example, “Orphan Black”, which is a popular BBC America series, now has a comic book series as well. The opposite has been happening for a long time – comics made into movies or TV shows. One extremely popular TV show called “The Walking Dead” is based on a long running horror comic of the same name.

A: 当たり前に知られていること以外はよくわからないわ。もちろん、アメリカのコミックは逆方向に読んでいくわね！私はたいていのアメリカのコミックは、スーパーヒーローものだと思っていたけど、歴史マンガやホラーマンガなどもたくさんある。
アメリカのコミックはずっと小さいの。ページ数も多くないから次に何が起こるかわかるのに翌月まで待たないといけない。あとアメリカには日本のマンガ雑誌のようなものはないわ。各コミックが単独で発行されているの。
最近は、たくさんの人気テレビドラマがコミック化されているわね。例えば、『オーファン・ブラック 暴走遺伝子』はBBC アメリカの人気テレビドラマで、今ではコミックもある。その逆、コミックの映画／テレビドラマ化はずっと前からあるわ。人気高い「ウォーキング・デッド」というテレビドラマは、同名の長寿ホラーコミックが原作よ。
