Q: What is the difference in nuance between “get somebody to do” and “have somebody do”?
A: This is a tricky one. Let’s start with “have somebody do”.
The nuance here is that you “have people” to assign a task to. Either you are a boss/manager, or you have your own staff.
A CEO might say “I’ll have somebody set up a meeting”, which means he will order his subordinate to do it. A millionaire might say “I’ll have somebody take care of the dinner party”, which means he will order his chef, butler, etc to set up a dinner party. So the feeling is that the person speaking has the ability to make someone else do the task.
If we say we will “get somebody to do it”, it could mean a couple of different things.
“Get somebody to set up a meeting” – in this case, we are asking that you find someone who has the time and is able to do this task.
“I’m going to get somebody to fix my brakes” – in this case, we are saying that we need to find a person who has the correct skills to do the task. I can’t do it, you can’t do it, so we need to get someone who can.
“See if you can get somebody to go down into the dark, scary basement” – in this case, we are asking that you convince or trick someone into doing something they don’t want to do.
