What is a carpool?

Q: Tell me about what a carpool is.  Is it common in America? Have you done it?

A carpool is a group of people commuting together, usually for work. This is often done in cities, where parking is hard to find, and traffic is bad. Usually a company offers some benefit to carpoolers, like paid parking, or a gas stipend. Carpools can be set up by the company or by individual employees. Sometimes carpools exist because a lot of people in the city don’t have cars, and it takes a long time to take the bus to work. Other times the coworkers take turns driving.  For example, on Mondays, Bob drives his car, and Ellen, Fred and Stan ride with him. On Tuesdays, Ellen drives her van, and she gives Bob, Fred and Stan a ride to work.
